What's Facebook Watch?

Facebook Watch 2

First came Facebook Live, then came Facebook Stories. But what’s Facebook got up their sleeves now?

Say hello to Facebook Watch

With Amazon Prime, NowTV, and Netflix, do we really need another streaming service in the world? Facebook says ‘yes’ as it launches Facebook Watch, a new home for exclusively produced and original video content.

For those of you who are native to the US, Facebook Watch is no stranger. Released for American audiences last August 2017, the rest of the world continue to eagerly await its international launch (and rumour has it, it might just be this summer).

We’re keeping our eyes peeled

Facebook’s currently filling it’s boots with all the best original content it can get its hands on. It’s looking to boast a library of thousands of shows from hundreds of content creators by the time it’s launches fully, giving it’s users an experience they can’t get anywhere else.

Although Facebook has admitted to funding some of its Facebook Watch content, anybody will be able to create shows in the future spanning from fictional TV shows, to live events and reality TV. With such a massive audience using Facebook, any popular content creators could be looking at a fairly significant revenue share.

So how does it work?

Much like Netflix, Facebook users will be able to scroll through categories until they find a show that takes their interest. Shows may also appear in their newsfeed if a friend is talking about their new favourite programme, or if someone is following a content creator.

However, (and this is where things get interesting) any TV shows will appear as pages on Facebook that users can subscribe to. There will also be Facebook groups connected to these programmes that allow for intense debates and discussions between fans and creators.

“We believe it’s possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community — including watching video. Watching a show doesn’t have to be passive . . . You’ll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community.”

- Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook

Facebook and chill?

Essentially, Facebook is upping its game, and a boost in revenue is sure to follow. With an edge of it’s competition, and great content exclusive to the platform, everyone will be flocking to Facebook like bees to the honey.
