What we can learn from Marie Kondo about social media marketing
Marie Kondo is a Japanese organising consultant and author. She has written four books on organising that have sold millions of copies, and recently featured in her own Netflix show entitled ‘tidying up with Marie Kondo’.
But what does Marie Kondo have to do with social media marketing?
Well, bear with us here. Marie Kondo’s attitude towards tidying and organising is not only about practicality but also about mindset and attitude. There is so much wisdom in Marie Kondo’s method that it can pretty much be applied to anything, including social media marketing.
Here are 5 Marie Kondo quotes that can help us master our social media strategy
“The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment”
The message here is that creating or re-vamping a social media strategy should not be done just for the sake of having a refresh. You should be aiming to create a social media strategy that makes you feel proud and will be genuinely enjoyable for your audience and target market.
“Human beings can only truly cherish a limited number of things at a time”
A good social media strategy does not need to include everything you can possibly think of. If you have limited time then it’s more than fine to pick out the essentials and work with those. Perhaps your target market spends the majority of their time on Instagram. If so, make Instagram your priority and expand to other social media channels at a later date. Concentrate on doing one or two things amazingly instead of hundreds of things at an okay level.
“Never discard anything without saying thank you and good-bye”
When reflecting on your social media strategy, when it comes to you planning Social it makes sense to discard content themes that are old and ineffective. But before you cut these themes from your strategy, be sure to reflect on how this content performed in the past and remember the good results it has brought you. If you do ultimately decide not to keep this content theme then simply say thank you, and then goodbye.
“Follow your intuition and all will be well”
The message for marketers here is to follow your instincts. If you believe your target market will respond well to something new then you’re probably right. If you think you need to branch out with some new and creative ideas, then you should try it, also be sure you're using the best social media platforms to help you get the best results . If your intuition says that something isn’t working then you should change it. Trust yourself and your knowledge and you will make the right decisions to benefit your company.
“The objects you decide to keep, the ones that gave you the spark of joy? Treasure them from now on”
When reflecting on your social media strategy, give praise to the elements that bring your business the most results whether it’s high engagement levels or physical leads for your business. Treasure these elements and think of new ways that they can be used.
