How to correctly organize your marketing content
Nobody likes a broken record; least of all, your social media audience.
As a result, it’s so important to keep your marketing content varied, strategic, and original in order to develop an audience that consistently engages with your content and re-visits your social media channels.
However, as with most things in life, it’s easier said than done.
Establishing social media themes (also known as content categories) for you brand is an essential first step when it comes to ensuring variety and adding structure to your social media strategy. It’ll also save you time when it comes to actually drafting your posts by acting as a guide and keeping you focussed on your goals.
Regardless, even if you’ve nailed down your content themes for social media and are ready to start drafting your next week, month, or more, of content, there’s still another hump that you need to overcome…
You need to be able to construct your plan in a way where these content topics / themes are obvious at a glance. You also need to see where particular content is covering more than one theme, and the details of what this content theme is actually about. When it comes to campaign planning, it’s also key for you to organize and label your content by campaign to ensure an even spread of content and that all pieces of the puzzle are effectively working together to achieve the campaign objectives.
Alongside content themes, you also need to consider key dates; whether they be internal key dates such as a product releases, or more international dates such as Christmas. These will also need to be highlighted in your plan so you can get involved with trending content and bring more attention to your brand by commenting on a popular topic.
You may think that your spreadsheet content calendar is doing the job just fine, but in reality, it’s harder to see at a glance which content belongs to which content topics, especially if you’re already in a habit of using color-codes to represent particular things such as the approval status of your content.

Within the Publish area, you can head to the ‘Setup’ section to create your Category Tags. You’ll be able to name your tag (such as ‘Monday Motivation’), and then pick a color for your tag. Once setup, whenever you’re creating a post in the Calendar you’ll be able to select your Category Tag (or Tags) from a dropdown menu to quickly add to your posts.
This allows you to spot any gaps in your upcoming content, ensure an even spread of content topics, and more effectively execute your socia media strategy!
