It’s a term we’ve seen mentioned more and more over the last 12 months.

The difficulty with it though is that it’s often reserved for a particular type of person in the business namely...

  • CEOs
  • Founders
  • Investors
  • Entrepreneurs

But building your personal brand shouldn’t be reserved for only the elite in business, in fact, if you’re not one of these people, building your personal brand can be even more crucial to helping you build your career than it is for the CEOs and Founders.

How to build a personal brand on social media

I’ll let you in on the most well-hidden secret I know - building your personal brand and building it well will literally change your life.

Do you want to be paid more?

Build your personal brand.

Do you want to work your way up the ladder in your role?

There are so many cases I know of where people, even without jobs, have focused on building their personal brand, and the opportunities that have come off the back of doing that have blown me away.

Okay, sounds great Ash, I’d love all those things to happen - one big question though…

How do I build my personal brand?

‘Building your personal brand’ can cover a wide range of activities, but the easiest and probably most effective one right now is to focus on your personal social media channels - your LinkedIn, or if you have business people there, your Instagram.

What you put on these channels can help build your profile and growth your value within your chosen industry - so choose wisely!

When approaching building your personal brand via your social media channels, the fundamentals of it are insanely simple.

  • Post about things that interest you
  • Write it in a way that makes people want to read it

If you do this process, consistently (weekly, for at least a year), you will change your career for the better in some way, shape or form.

Let’s break down these two fundamentals:

Post about things that interest you

Logic says that this has to be around your ‘skill’ or ‘industry’, but that’s not entirely the case. Yes it helps because fundamentally we need to understand what you do and how you can help us if we ever need it, but it’s only half the job. The other half is selling us on your personality.

If you seem like a nice, interesting person who also happens to be skilled in a particular area, you’re winning the majority of the battles you need to win to create opportunity.

My advice would be to pick the 2-4 things that you could talk about forever.

That’s right, forever.

Why forever?

Because we’re aiming for consistency here.

If you’re in social media, and you don’t really care about data but you decide data is going to be 1 of your 2-4 things you talk about, you’re going to run out of things to say, come up short on ideas around it, or you’re just going to stop caring because underneath it all, you just don’t care about data.

To build a personal brand you only need to talk about 2 things really well.

For me, that’s personal branding and my journey in business.

That is literally all I talk about online and through talking about those 2 things really well for a consistent period of time - it has literally changed my life.

So don’t overthink what you need to talk about, just figure out what you really could talk about forever and go in that direction.

Okay, that’s point number one taken care of, now for the second.

Write it in a way that makes people want to read it

Writing about the things you’re passionate about is easy.

Writing about the things you’re passionate about in a way that engages the reader is hard.

The skill you need to focus on developing here is copywriting.

Building a personal brand

Understanding how to frame your words, sentences, paragraphs, and statements in a way that evokes emotion will be the difference between success and failure when it comes to building your personal brand via your social media channels. (Side note - understanding the social media platform you’re using too is really important, but that’s an article in itself).

I would highly encourage you to do a deep dive into copywriting. Use YouTube, podcasts, blogs, etc. as they have all the information you’ll need to get you started on how to write good copy.

If you’re able to combine 2-4 things you can talk about forever, with good copywriting - you can change your career for the better.

Personal Branding can literally change your life, and it isn’t just for CEOs and Founders, it’s for everyone.
