Microsoft considers buying TikTok

🤔 What happened?

Microsoft already owns one social network, in LinkedIn, but the acquisition of TikTok would enable it to enter an entirely different element of the market, and one which seems largely outside of Microsoft's current comfort zone.

💡 My take

Microsoft is eyeing up the purchase of TikTok. Don't forget Microsoft already own LinkedIn. With Microsoft having LinkedIn and TikTok in their social media stable presents two opposite ends of the social media spectrum and could really take the battle to Facebook. That'll be an interesting one to watch.

Facebook unveils new music video approach

🤔 What happened?

Facebook has unveiled it's new 'Music Video Playlists' within Facebook Watch, which will increase the focus on Facebook-exclusive releases, coordinated in partnership with music labels.

💡 My take

Moving on to Facebook, they've announced some new video hosting features for music videos and some deals that they are striking with music publishers. Facebook is really going to take the battle to YouTube in this space. On Facebook Watch they've also launched playlists related to these music videos, which is really going to bring Facebook Watch into to play which so far has not seen significant growth. However, with Facebook now doing direct deals with music publishers and having solutions to watch the latest music videos through Facebook Watch, it'll be interesting to see how this goes

Facebook adds 100 million more users

🤔 What happened?

Facebook has once again reported steady growth in its latest earnings report, with the platform now exceeding 3 billion users worldwide across its 'family of apps'.

💡 My take

Facebook has also announced a hundred million monthly active users that they've added in Q2 as a result of COVID-19.

Pinterest surpasses 400 million MAU

🤔 What happened?

Pinterest is now up to 416 million monthly active users, which means that the platform now has more users than Twitter, Snapchat and LinkedIn, and it looks set to continue adding more as people look to online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic.

💡 My take

Pinterest is now at 419 million monthly active users which is more than Twitter and Snapchat. That means that Pinterest has added over 50 million monthly actives in just the last couple of months. So Pinterest is on fire, but the really interesting thing about Pinterest for the moment is that they've seen significant growth in the male monthly active users. If you think about it, Pinterest is predominantly females over 25, and where they have seen the growth is in the male and under 25 demographics. These groups are predominantly searching for 'fun family activities' and also 'home ideas'. The source of the growth is from younger generations gaining inspiration and that's where Pinterest is owning the space around 'Discovery'. As things go more into e-commerce and our shopping habits shift online, Pinterest is definitely one to watch here.
