LinkedIn rolls out 'Fair Chance' job filter

🤔 What happened?

LinkedIn is rolling out a new job filter to help job seekers find employers who consider job applications from people who have a criminal record.

💡 My take

LinkedIn has announced a 'Fair Chance' job filter. This was a really big thing for CEO Jeff Weiner where he wanted to level the playing field for individuals to have an equal opportunity out in the world and I just love that ambition.

Within LinkedIn's job filters there's the ability to look at 'fair chance' employees where employers will consider people with criminal records as well as others from less desirable backgrounds. This means that these people have more of an opportunity to get jobs where they might typically be a forgotten demographic. This is a really great example of social media being used for good.

Introducing Pinterest Lite

🤔 What happened?

After rolling out its (much) smaller Pinterest Lite app, last year, Pinterest has now announced the app is being launched globally.

💡 My take

Pinterest Lite is a much smaller version of their mobile app which has been optimized for low bandwidth situations which is fantastic for emerging markets - just think of places like Latin America where the growth of social media is at its strongest. This would be fantastic news for brands who want to leverage growth in those markets.

Byte to pay up to $250,000 for good videos

🤔 What happened?

Byte will introduce its first partner program, with $250,000 to be shared between 100 creators based on their viewership.

💡 My take

Byte, which you might remember, is a kind of evolution from Vine. It's got a bit of a confusing backgroud story where Vine was sold to Twitter, got culled, and then the original founders of Vine went onto build Byte (which to all intents and purposes is basically the same platform). Byte have now announced that they are paying creators up to $250,000 to create content for the platform which is almost like inciting a war for creative talent on TikTok.

I don't believe there is room for multiple winners in this space as it's going to be dominated by a video-first creator-led platform. Hopefully, I'm proven wrong on this one but it feels to me as if TikTok is too far ahead of the game in this regard so it'll be interesting to see how Byte does as they compete for attention.

Facebook Messenger ditches Discover, demotes chat bots

🤔 What happened?

Chat bots were central to Facebook Messenger’s strategy three years ago. Now they’re being hidden from view in the app along with games and businesses. Facebook Messenger is now removing the Discover tab as it focuses on speed and simplicity instead of broad utility like China’s WeChat.

💡 My take

Similar to Pinterest, Facebook have made a lighter version of their app (that they are now rolling out to everyone). Over time, the Facebook Messenger app had become bloated over time with 1.7 million lines of code. They've now reduced this down to 360 thousand.

The heavier Facebook Messenger app featured ways to interact with businesses, chat bots, and 'M', (who is basically their version of Siri). They've now canned all of this for a much more simplified user experience that is just about messaging and Stories.

This change really ties in with Facebook's mantra which is all about community and less about business orientation so Facebook Messenger is going to be less of a place to interact with businesses. What a business can note from this, however, is that the new Facebook Messenger puts more emphasis on Stories so creating this content for Facebook is going to be rising in importance.

LinkedIn Stories are coming and Twitter tests 'Fleets'

🤔 What happened?

LinkedIn has this week confirmed that it's working on its own version of Stories which will be rolled out to all users soon.

Twitter is testing its own version of Stories, called 'Fleets', letting users post ephemeral content that disappears after 24 hours.

💡 My take

I wonder how the founders of Snapchat feel knowing that every social media platform is copying their ideas for ephemeral content. LinkedIn have now announced that they're rolling out Stories which is wonderful news. I think this is a great aspect of social media and I think it'll be a really great addition to LinkedIn. Meanwhile, Twitter have made a similar announcement as they look into 'Fleet' which is their version of Stories.

Fleets is already being met with some criticism as it's kind of opposing to how Twitter works so we'll see how that gets adopted in the future. Personally, it seems like Twitter is just being very 'me too' orientated on this one.

I for one, am less concerned about Twitter and more just excited for LinkedIn's Story capability. When they do roll that out imagine the weight they're gonna put behind this. LinkedIn Stories, along with LinkedIn Live, is transforming LinkedIn into a video-first platform.
