Instagram introduces Instagram Reels

🤔 What happened?

Instagram has launched Instagram Reels: a new way to create and discover short, entertaining videos on Instagram.

💡 My take

Instagram Reels has officially launched. We were expecting it in August and hey presto, it's here. It has been a little rushed out the door, which is fair to say because there are some features that are missing. It's been launched to some mixed reviews and feedback and it's fair to say that discoverability is poor ie. where do you find Reels within the Instagram app. Secondly, there's a lot of features around the curation/quality of the feed that isn't as advanced as TikTok (which you would expect really). However, I've no doubt that Instagram are going to be developing this at the rate of knots.

TikTok is launching its first TV app on Amazon Fire TV

🤔 What happened?

TikTok is launching its first TV app. “More on TikTok” will feature curated playlists and compilations on Amazon Fire TV.

💡 My take

Our second story is once again about TikTok. TikTok has launched an Amazon TV app that doesn't require you to create an account and doesn't require you to login; it's just there for the consumption of content. This really brings the TikTok experience of real lightweight entertainment to the masses in a really nice and easy to consume format. I think this is a really interesting move because its the closest bridge between social media TV we've yet seen. TikTok is perfectly suited to casual consumption so the battle between TikTok and Reelsis only just beginning.

Google brings lead form extensions to Youtube + Discovery Campaigns

🤔 What happened?

After testing lead form ad extensions in Search campaigns since last October, Google is extending the feature to YouTube and Discovery campaigns.

💡 My take

Moving into Google and Youtube, they've launched some new 'lead form' ads. This means that when you're using Youtube, you can now run some lead gen forms as you would get on LinkedIn. These forms allow people to request a download (like a whitepaper) with most of the form fields pre-populated. That's live on Youtube now and it's coming to display ads very very shortly.
